The company at the centre of the tainted milk food Monday apologised for its contaminated milk powder which has killed two babies and made more than 1,200 others sick.

Zhang Zhenling, vice president of Sanlu Group, read a letter of apology at a news briefing in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province, where the corporation is based, Xinhua news agency said.

"The serious safety accident of the Sanlu formula milk powder for infants has caused severe harm to many sickened babies and their families. We feel really sad about this," he said, reading the letter to reporters.

"Sanlu Group expresses its most sincere apology to you."

Sanlu last week ordered a recall of its milk powder produced before August 6 after finding it contained melamine, a chemical raw material that can cause kidney stones.

"We solemnly declare we will recall all the infant milk powder produced prior to August 6. And for those produced after that date, we will also make a recall if consumers have doubts and worries," Zhang said.
