Updated: 2008-09-05 20:00 BEIJING - The Chinese government announced on Friday that it is providing cash assistance to the governments of Cuba, Jamaica and the United States, the three countries hit by Hurricane Gustav. According to the announcement, China will offer US$300,000 to Cuba, US$100,000 to Jamaica and 100,000 dollars to the United States. Meanwhile, the Red Cross Society of China also announced cash aid of US$50,000 to each of the red cross societies of the three countries. Gustav struck the United States on Monday, sweeping through the US Gulf Coast region including New Orleans city, Louisiana, which is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina that hit the area in 2005. Millions of people in the US Gulf Coast had fled before the arrival of Hurricane Gustav, which rendered many places without power and some community water and sewage systems out of service. The storm killed more than 80 people in the Caribbean before being downgraded and hitting the US Gulf Coast region. |
