BEIJING -- China Eastern Airlines (CEA) has canceled flights to Chengdu, capital of the quake-stricken southwest Sichuan Province, according to a company spokesman.

CEA has planned back-up flights to help move disaster relief supplies and workers, the spokesman said. All subsidiaries will prioritize transportation of relief goods and staff, he said.

The company was informing passengers of the canceled flights, according to the spokesman.

A major earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. Monday, according to the State Seismological Bureau.
