YINCHUAN -- Eleven people died and 12 others were injured when a truck collided head-on into a tractor in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, police said on Monday.

The accident occurred at around 7:20 am on Sunday in the Hanjiaoshui Township, Zhongning County, Zhongwei City, killing five instantly, a spokesman for the county police said.

Six others died on their way to hospital.

Twelve people were injured in the accident and are being treated at a hospital in Tongxin County, Wuzhong City.

"The injured people are all stable now," said Ma Denghai, head of the Tongxin hospital.

Initial investigations showed the truck veered into the lane of the oncoming tractor.

Police are hunting the truck driver Jin Wenhua, a native of Zhongning County, who fled after the accident. Ha Guoyin, the tractor driver, is among the 12 injured.
