Romanian President Traian Basescu said Thursday that it is a long-term strategic policy for Romania to develop friendly cooperative relations with China.

The policy will not be changed, said the president during a meeting with Xu Jian, the outgoing Chinese ambassador to Romania.

The friendship between Romania and China is true "friendship in need" as it has a solid foundation and the two peoples have long cherished sincere and friendly feelings toward each other, said the president.

In recent years, the exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including politics, economy and culture, have been fruitful, and both sides have conducted close cooperation and provided support for each other on the international arena, he noted.

Basescu stressed that China is a strategic partner that Romania can trust.

Romania's entry into the European Union (EU) in January has brought new opportunities for the further development of bilateral relations, he noted.

Romania is keen to develop an all-around friendly partnership with China and is willing to become China's good friend and partner in the EU, the president said.
