A newlywed couple in a village in Zhejiang Province gave everyone who attended their wedding a gift of a platinum ring, stirring controversy.

The groom, surnamed Hu, thought the gift was meaningful and practical, and, since he was from a rich family, the 30,000 yuan ($3,876) he had spent on the rings did not matter to him.

While many people appreciated Hu's generosity, some unmarried young couples in the village now say they feel pressure to match the action when they can't afford to.
