China willing to set up ties with the Vatican(Shanghai Daily)Updated: 2007-01-19 13:57 China is willing to establish ties with the Vatican on the basis of two principles, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao yesterday. The Vatican must cut its so-called "diplomatic relationship" with Taiwan, and admit that the Chinese government is the only legal government that can represent China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, Liu said in a press conference in Beijing. "Also, the Vatican can't intervene in the internal affairs of China, including in the name of "religious affairs," Liu said. Liu said China and the Vatican can improve their relations through the two principles. |
