Macao Customs officials confiscated more than 500 fake designer goods found in a truck returning from the mainland on Monday and detained the driver for questioning.

The seized items included handbags, wallets, clothes, scarves, belts, boots and jewellery all carrying one of four well-known European labels.

The driver, Lau, in his 50s, presented paperwork declaring the goods belonged to a local logistics company. But the items declared were metal and plastic ware, computer hard drives, stickers and garments.

Customs officials asked local representatives of the European brands to inspect the items, but they were certain the goods were counterfeit due to poor craftsmanship and noticeable differences from the genuine articles.

A senior manager of the logistics company also went to the Customs office to answer questions.
