Man hacks on pupils in Xinjiang

URUMQI -- A man hacked on a group of pupils Wednesday afternoon in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, causing death of two pupils and injuries of three others and one teacher.

According to local police, the accident occurred at 2:00 p.m. when the students and teacher, with the primary school attached to the No. 65 Middle School of the city, were waiting to walk across the street in front of the school.

One student died on the spot and the other failed to survive after receiving treatment in hospital, the police said, adding that the victims are about nine to ten years old.

The man has been arrested, the police said, but refused to release further details about the suspect.

The injured ones are receiving treatment in the regional people's hospital. One of them is in situation of narcosis due to over bloodshed.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
