An association of local taxi companies and owners will invest millions of Hong Kong dollars to equip 500 to 600 taxis with GPS tracking systems. The high-tech gadgets are expected to make it easier for owners to locate stolen property and will improve service to the public.

But some taxi drivers said their mobile phones and pocket computers already served this purpose.

Many consumers applauded the move, saying GPS systems could help cab drivers do a better job.
