Beijing -- The Chinese mainland has reiterated its offer of medical aid to
Shaw Hsiao-ling, wife of Taichung Mayor Jason C. Hu in Taiwan, who was seriously
wounded in a car accident over a week ago.
"The mainland is willing to
provide necessary assistance, including medical assistance, at the request of
Shaw's family. We have expressed our concern and wish her a quick recovery,"
said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, on
Wednesday.
His comments came at a routine press conference in response
to a question from a Taiwan reporter, who asked whether the mainland's offer of
medical care was still valid.
At a press conference on November 24, a
spokesman for the office had expressed the mainland's wish to provide medical
assistance.
The couple and two aides were injured in a car crash on the
night of November 18 as they were heading back to Taichung after attending an
election rally.
Hu suffered slight injuries to his head and hands, but
Shaw was thrown from the car and trapped under the overturned vehicle. Doctors
were forced to amputate Shaw's forearm and remove her spleen during emergency
surgery, according to local media.
According to Taiwan media reports,
the Taiwan hospital treating Shaw said on Monday that she was in a stable
condition. She could open her eyes and responded to sound, according to the
doctors.
Hu was also making a good recovery and was working on some
paperwork in the ward, a local official said.
