About 40 deer, valued at over 10,000 yuan (US$1,233) each, died of sunstroke last week at a breeding farm in Sichuan Province, with 200 others also falling ill following the year's persistent hot weather.

The summer heat has posed a threat to local animal breeding, as thousands of animals and livestock are now facing a potential epidemic outbreak of indigestion or respiratory infection, experts said.
