The Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) will establish a system to evaluate best-selling brands based on enterprises' sales and market share, Wang Desheng, assistant inspector of the Brand Promotion team, revealed at the seminar on brands held on August 15 afternoon in Yuncheng, a city of North China's Shanxi Province.

Wang added that the essentials of brand development are to, based on resources, set up an effective advertising and promotion system and step up brand evaluation and protection efforts.

In another development, the Brand Promotion team, which was sent by the MOFCOM to cover 51 cities within 129 days, attended a ceremony unveiling the Keon landmark monument at the Nafine Square in the morning.

Currently, Yuncheng has two Chinese Top Brands (the compound washing powder and detergent liquid of Nafine Group), accounting for one-third of the total in Shanxi Province; four provincial representative brands, 12 percent of the total; 17 provincial famous brands, 10 percent of the total; and four national products exempted from quarantine inspection, 23 percent of the total.

Despite the progress the city has made in the past years, there is still a big gap between Yuncheng and developed cities in the country's eastern area, said vice mayor Zhang Jianxi. Takes the number of Chinese Top Brands for instance, Qingdao, Shandong Province, and Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, both have 44; Shunde, a county-level city in Guangdong, even has six; while Yuncheng, only two, he added.

To improve the situation, Zhang said, Yuncheng will increase government support, integrate brand resources, encourage enterprises' technology and system innovation, and create a better environment for the development of self-owned brands.

At present, the city government of Yuncheng grants a bonus of 200,000 yuan to each of enterprises honored as the Chinese Top Brands or Shanxi Provincial Representative Brands, and 100,000 yuan to each of those honored as Shanxi Provincial Famous Brands.
