Death toll from Kaemi hits 28 in south China (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-07-28 08:51
The death toll from typhoon Kaemi has risen to 28 in south China, with at
least 60 others missing, confirmed local flood control sources on Thursday
evening.
Rainstorm has hit south China's Guangdong Province since Tuesday afternoon.
Five people were killed by ensuing landslide and flood, according to provincial
authorities.
Maximum rainfall has reached 380 millimeters. Altogether 1.86 million people
in 28 counties were affected by Kaemi-incurred disasters and 8,386 houses were
toppled down.
Drawing on the lesson of Bilis that killed 113 in Guangdong, provincial
government has evacuated at least 390,000 people and assembled 52 rafts for
rescue operation.
In southeast China's Jiangxi Province, Kaemi has left 23 dead and 53 missing.
Hunan also reported seven missing in landslide and flood.
