Once a prosperous port town in ancient China, the city of Quanzhou is mulling another rise via the establishment of brand names of its own.

The China Brand Promotion tour entered in Quanzhou, the second stop right after Fuzhou of East China's Fujian Province on July 10.

The Ministry of Commerce statistics shows that there are all 85,000 brand name products of various kinds worldwide, more than 90 per cent of which are created and owned by the developed western countries.

China has only a few world famous brand names, said officials with the economic development zone of the city. Quanzhou has made a name in huge exports of products of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

While seeing huge sales of high-end brand name products and consumption throughout the world, the Quanzhou-created is rare to see, local officials said.

In order to strengthen the high-value-added products which are competent and highly profitable in the world market, local government showed great supports in fostering new brand names.

"We continue to try to enlighten the notion of brand-establishing among local enterprises and create for them a positive environment for business and trade," said a trade offical with the city administration.

In the brand-building process, several insightful local sports shoes enterprises have made great progress, such as Peak Corporation, Anta Group Limited, and Fuguiniao Group Limited.

In 1999, Fuguiniao was chosen the "famous Chinese brand," the first ever in Quanzhou.

Quanzhou hopes that two to three local enterprises will build their brand names internationally known.
