A Chinese foreign trade official said on Tuesday, June 13, that China plans to have some 10 home-grown brands into the global top 500 brands by the year 2010.

Huo Jianguo, deputy director of the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce, forecast that the proportion of exports with home-grown brands will reach over 20% of China's total exports by then.

There is much work to be done to achieve this, he said. Chinese enterprises and consumers should have a high awareness of brands and help build Chinese brands.

The ministry plans to take measures to foster, support and protect Chinese brands, particularly those with a long history and and to help them become globally competitive.
