Indonesia toll nears 6,000; China offers aid worth $1.25m (Xinhua/AP) Updated: 2006-05-30 21:04
The Chinese government has decided to provide earthquake-hit Indonesia with
relief materials worth 10 million yuan (1.25 million U.S. dollars), Chinese
Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said here Tuesday.
A special chartered plane will fly these materials to airports designated by
the Indonesian side, the Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday.
China announced last Saturday to provide an urgent aid of 2 million U.S.
dollars in cash for Indonesia and sent a rescue team to quake-affected areas on
Monday.
"We believe the Indonesian government and people are able to overcome
difficulties and rebuild their homes with the help of international community,"
said Liu.
At least 5,427 people have died in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake, which hit
Indonesia's Java island last Saturday.
