Jan 25, 1981: Lin Biao and Jiang Qing, the prime culprits of a counter-revolutionary group, are judged
On Jan 25, 1981, after a trial, the Supreme Special Court passed judgment on 10 prime culprits of a counter-revolutionary group, including Lin Biao and Jiang Qing. The court sentenced Jiang Qing and Zhang Chunqiao to death. The death sentence was suspended for two years with deprivation of political rights for life. The court sentenced Wang Hongwen to life imprisonment with deprivation of political rights for life. The court sentenced seven other criminals to imprisonment: 20 years for Yao Wenyuan, 18 years for Chen Boda, 18 years for Huang Yongsheng, 17 years for Wu Faxian, 18 years for Li Zuopeng, 16 years for Qiu Huizuo and 18 years for Jiang Tengjiao. All were deprived of political rights for five years. The court’s sentences expressed the will of the people, upholding justice and embodying the dignity of the socialist legal system.
