3. Apartment building collapses in Shanghai
|
A 13-floor apartment building under construction in the Lotus Riverside residential complex in Shanghai's Minhang district fell on its side, almost intact, on a Saturday morning in June.
A 28-year-old construction worker surnamed Xiao from Anhui province was buried in the rubble and killed.
Unbalanced groundwork with piles of earth mounting on its northern side, and a 4.6-meter-deep pit to its south where an underground garage was being built was blamed for the collapse, according to municipal authorities.
Nine people, working for the property developer, contractor, quality supervisor or the construction company involved in the project, were put under investigation by the police after the incident.
Hundreds of fuming homeowners who had bought the apartments stormed the reception office of the local government demanding a refund.
