Gibson arrested for drink-driving
The actor and film director Mel Gibson has been arrested in Malibu on suspicion ofGibson, 50, was stopped yesterday for speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway. Officers smelt alcohol on his breath. He was given a sobriety test, taken into custody and later released.
Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff, said:“He was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence."Mr Whitmore said that the matter would be reviewed by detectives to determine if drink-driving charges would be filed at a later date.
Gibson's spokesman was not available for comment. Gibson rose to stardom in the late 1970s and 1980s in the Mad Max films. In 1995 he directed Braveheart, about the 13th-century Scottish rebel William Wallace. It won five Oscars, including Best Picture. His film The Passion of the Christ, made in 2004, took £328 million at the box office. (Reuters)
