-- In March, Mao Zedong calls on all Chinese to learn from Lei Feng, a 22-year-old soldier who devoted his spare time to helping others, in the wake of disasters. Lei is struck and killed after directing a colleague to back off a truck in 1962.

-- Premier Zhou Enlai announces that China is self-sufficient in oil supplies.
