SKOPJE, Macedonia: China's Zhengzhou Yutong Group would supply 202 double-decker buses for the Macedonian capital's public transport system, the Transport Ministry said late Monday.

Retro design was the key element that won the company the 41 million euro ($55.4 million) deal, the Ministry's press release said. The Ministry demanded the buses be similar to those used in Skopje in the 1950s.

Zhengzhou Yutong is one of the biggest bus producers in China. Its buses are in service in many countries and regions across the globe, including Russia, Singapore, Jamaica, Egypt and Cuba.

Yutong won the same bid in June last year but the Ministry cancelled the tender after other bidders alleged procedural flaws.

The Government last year said it would completely renew its ageing bus fleet, which has vehicles up to 30 years old. In December, Ukrainian bus producer LAZ won a tender to supply 80 buses.
