Pearl market sparkles
(China Daily)
Updated: 2008-08-13 14:47 Beijing's Hongqiao Pearl Market has long been a mecca for those looking for stunningly beautiful jewelry. A 20-minute walk south from Chongwenmen subway station, the country's largest pearl market trades about 200 tons of pearls annually, while the world's yearly output is roughly 1,600 tons. The market is home to all kinds of pearls, different in color, size and smoothness. Depending on the quality, the prices range from just a few yuan to thousands. There are seawater pearls, freshwater pearls, as well as coral, emeralds and other precious stones for sale. There are also plenty of fashionable pearl necklaces, exquisite pearl rings and simple yet elegant pearl pendants. But the market area contains more than just pearls and jewelry. This big indoor mall has a seafood market in the basement, and the three floors above are filled with everything from silk garments to cheap electronic goods, clothing and accessories. To celebrate the Beijing Olympic Games, the second Pearl Culture Festival is now also running at the newly renovated marketplace. It includes a forum on the developing trends of the pearl industry, art performances and a collection of donations for the quake-affected victims in Sichuan province. Collector pearls and precious gems from both home and abroad will also be on display at the exhibit, according to the organizer. Bargaining is a necessary skill for every shopper at the market. Be sure to propose at least half the price of anything the dealers offer here.
