Rolls-Royce wins contract for China's seismic research vessels

Rolls-Royce Plc, a world-leading provider of power systems and services for use on land, at sea and in the air, will design and equip one of the world's most advanced seismic research vessels for China, said the company. The $25.58 million contract is its first such contract in the important Chinese market for offshore seismic vessels. "This breakthrough contract for Rolls-Royce integrated systems further strengthens our position in the growing Chinese offshore market," said Anders Almestad, Rolls-Royce President–Offshore.
The Rolls-Royce designed NVC 830 seismic research vessel is twin-screw with a direct drive propulsion system, improving towing capabilities for the 14 streamer cables, outfitted for autonomous operations year around in both shallow and deep waters. The integrated solution from Rolls-Royce also includes engines, main propellers, tunnel thruster, steering gears and rudders, diesel generators, mooring winches, automation system and switchboards. Earlier this year, Rolls-Royce won a $114.19 million contract to deliver design and equipment systems for two of the world's most advanced offshore support vessels – that was also a first for the Chinese market, said Almestad. Rolls-Royce has been present in China for over 45 years. In addition to Marine, the Civil Aerospace and Energy businesses have a strong presence in China. Rolls-Royce business in China has grown rapidly in recent years. In 2007, the value of the company's purchasing in China exceeded $200 million in 2007. (For more biz stories, please visit Industries)
