The Jiading District in Shanghai is launching a district-wide campaign to build an ecological living area for its residents using new energy-saving building materials.

The campaign is part of the city's effort to build an energy-thrifty housing system with new technologies and materials.

Jiading Director Sun Jiwei said 65 percent of the materials used in new houses and buildings in the next several years will be designed to save energy.

Sun said the district government will work out policies to support the project by investing in it heavily.

Jiading yesterday held a conference of experts and scholars from China, Japan and Germany to discuss ways of pushing the project forward.
