As the biggest port city in Northeast China, Dalian is open to new technology from other parts of the country and the world. It is also famous for its low operations costs and access to convenient transportation, said the mayor. Dalian may not be the biggest base for equipment manufacturing, but it will by all means be the leader in the field because of its advantages, he added.

Two giants in equipment manufacturers, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corp Ltd (DSIC) and DHI•DCW Group Co Ltd are located in the city. DSIC is currently the largest shipbuilder in China, while DHI•DCW produces China's biggest 1.5 MW wind-powered generating set and will launch a three MW wind-powered generating set by the end of the year.

According to Xia, Dalian is planning to bring in more high-tech and environment friendly equipment manufacturers.

Dalian is also known for its chemical and petrol industries. As it extends its core business to the service industry, it hopes to include financial services, tourism, and logistics services, said Xia.
