Carmakers outline engine strategies

Huatai Automobile Group has started construction of a diesel engine factory. The plant in Erdos City, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, will produce engines for passenger cars. Upon completion of the project, Huatai is expected to become the largest diesel engine producer in China. Huatai says its new engine plant will produce diesel engines with four different displacements: 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 2.8 liters. The engines, with common rail direct injection, were developed with help from Italy's VM Motori SpA. The first phase of the project in Erdos, with an annual capacity of 300,000 units, is scheduled to be completed later this year.
