Shenzhen,Hong Kong to promote high-tech co-op

The cooperation model of Hong Kong as the R&D center and Shenzhen as the manufacturing base is ideal for the two cities, Zhang Laiwu, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology told a news conference at the 2010 China Hi-tech Fair on Nov 15.

The Shenzhen & Hong Kong Innovation Circle, a program launched in 2007 to promote SZ-HK cooperation in innovation and hi-tech industries, exhibited the R&D results and industrialized projects at Hall No 9 of Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center.

"The Shenzhen & Hong Kong Innovation Circle is a bridge between Chinese Hi-tech industries and international market," said Zhang. "And it is also a way to make the most out of the R&D strengths of both cities and a platform to demostrate the achievements," he said.

"A batch of 8 innovation bases, 12 service platforms and 4 key projects were implemented since the circle's launch," said Xie Jianmin, vice chief of Shenzhen Science, Technology and Information Commission.

The RFID and sensor technology, cooperated by the city's inspection and quarantine bureau and Hong Kong University, was already used in the real-time inspection and origin tracing system applied to food supply chain to Hong Kong.

Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) and Chinese University of Hong Kong conducted cutting edge gene study projects.

The Solar Energy Photovoltaic Power Project of DuPont Company was the highlight at the exhibition as the first project settled in both Shenzhen and Hong Kong. "The two city governments had made great efforts in building the circle and the international science and technology domain will see increasing achievements from the two cities," said Wang Rongzhen, chief of Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong.
