At the China International Green Industry Expo 2010, which opens today in Beijing, other countries will also show off their achievements in building a greener life, something China could still learn from.

The world's economic powerhouses, the United States, the European Union and Japan have all made progress in expanding their green economy ideas in trying to deal with climate change.

US President Barrack Obama unveiled an environment and energy plan in January 2009, by announcing an investment of $150 billion to create five million jobs in the green energy sector.

The plan has a goal of producing 1 million electric cars by 2015; renewable energy accounting for 10 percent of total energy consumption in 2010; and 25 percent in 2015; and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.

In 2009, the US Congress passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act, consisting of four parts: green energy, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, and low-carbon transformation.

It requires US power, petroleum, and manufacturing companies to pick an emissions-cut target and take part in carbon trading.

In January 2008, the European Commission proposed binding legislation to implement its 20-20-20 targets. This climate and energy package was agreed on by the European Parliament and European Council in December 2008 and became law in June 2009.

To begin the process, EU heads of state announced a demanding series of climate and energy targets to be met by 2020.

These were referred to as the "20-20-20" targets: A reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions of at least 20 percent below 1990 levels; a total of 20 percent of EU energy consumption to come from renewable resources; and a 20 percent reduction in primary energy use through improved energy efficiency.

Japan also announced its "Innovation for a Green Economy and Society" in April 2009. Its purpose was to function as the trigger of a Japanese economic recovery through green innovation.

The plan contains provisions for a "low carbon society," a "sound materials-recycling society", and a "society in harmony with nature".
