Good garbage sorting to be rewarded in capital

Beijing residents who classify their garbage correctly prior to collection will be rewarded this year, the city's environment authority said on Wednesday.

In 2013, the Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment selected several communities for a pilot program on garbage classification. So far, 515 of those communities have met the city's standards.

"We decided to provide awards for those who did well in the garbage classification and we are discussing the specifics with the city's financing authority now," said Li Rugang, the commission's spokesman.

Li added that the reward aims to attract more residents to garbage classification teams while retaining the current talent.

The city produced almost 6.72 million metric tons of household garbage last year, which means about 18,400 tons produced a day, according to the commission.

To aid the rubbish disposal process, the commission will accelerate the construction of refuse sites across the city.
