Residents unite to combat the great flood in Yueyang county of Hunan province in 1998. Yang Shizhong

-- Most of the country suffers severe floods, with Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Heilongjia and Jilin provinces and Inner Mongolia sustaining heavy losses. More than 3,000 people are killed. Some 300,000 troops are deployed for rescue and relief.

-- In the wake of the floods, the central government issues a series of new regulations banning logging in mountains and hilly lands and protecting the environment.
