-- The Third Plenary Session of the 12th CPC Central Committee endorses a planned commodity economy, a sign that China would open up and make efforts to revitalize the economy.

-- As the textile industry flourishes, cloth is no longer a limited commodity and coupons rationing a families' cloth are phased out.

-- The Chinese and British governments sign a joint declaration, under which Hong Kong will be restored to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997, when a special administrative region will be established there, leaving the social system and lifestyle unchanged for 50 years.

-- Xu Haifeng becomes the first Chinese to win an Olympic gold medal at the Los Angeles Games. China earns 15 golds and is fourth on the medals table.
