Youths travel to work on new farmland in Beidahuang, or "the virgin island of the North", Heilongjiang province, in 1968. Weng Naiqiang

-- The second bridge spanning the Yangtze River opens to traffic in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province.

-- "Workers' propaganda teams" are dispatched to all educational institutions. The teams's "permanent leadership" of schools is announced.

-- Based on false charges, State Chairman Liu Shaoqi is expelled from the Party and removed from all posts.

-- The People's Daily publishes Mao Zedong's directive for urban high school graduates to go to the countryside to receive "re-education".
