Cosmetic surgery tourism boost during holiday

During the just finished eight-day holiday, which combined Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day break, the number of Chinese visitors to South Korea was expected to reach a record high - about 100,000.

They were estimated to have spent as much as KRW 20 billion ($17 million) there, according to the Korea Tourism Organization, an official institution under South Korea's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Guangzhou Daily newspaper reported.

Besides sightseeing tours, cosmetic surgery tourism to South Korea is also on the rise, sources at local plastic surgery hospitals said. "Surgery appointments from the Chinese are fully booked and we even don't have time to accept appointments from local people," a person working in a hospital in the Gangnam area was quoted as saying.

FLYPIGWITHWINGS: I'm wondering whether customs officers will find that the photo on her passport is different from what she looks like when she returns to China.

Z_KY: I really don't understand why people go for cosmetic surgery unless they were born with a congenital defect or later suffered a disfigurement because of an accident.

RHINOCEROSHAMSTER: Customs officers are facing mounting pressure then.

RANWUJIU: Some of the plastic surgery hospitals in South Korea are not as good as their counterparts in China. Why would they specially rush to South Korea for such an operation?

HERNY1314: Chinese men have to be rather careful when getting married in the future. Before marrying a woman, you have to know which countries she has been to before. If they have visited South Korea, it's better to be prudent in making a decision.

JUNZHULEYUAN: The tourists who previously intended to visit Japan all went to South Korea. It's no wonder that the tourists to South Korea created a record high.

PAGUOSUMMER: It's better that South Korea doesn't fight for islands with China otherwise what will happen if the Chinese don't go to their hospitals for plastic surgery?

WOODDOLLLITAO: After the holidays, we'll see beauties roaming the streets.
