China has approved plans for a 70.8-billion-yuan ($10.6 billion) high-speed railway to connect its inland cities of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, and Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province. Construction of the railway is due to begin later this year.

The 510-kilometer railway, which is planned to run at 250 kilometers per hour, will cut travel time between the two cities to about two hours from the current 13.

Running through the rugged Qinling Mountains, one-quarter of the rail line will run through tunnels.
