Poll launched for top 10 Chinese firms in Africa

BEIJING - An on-line poll opened Friday for the top 10 Chinese enterprises that have made significant contributions to infrastructure building and development of Africa.

The China-Africa Friendship Association and China Radio International co-sponsored the poll, which runs until Nov 15. People from China and Africa are encouraged to vote for the top 10 out of the 20 candidate enterprises on http://gb.cri.cn/news/other/gbfz/index.htm, and http://english.cri.cn/other/movingafrica/index.htm.

The nominees, selected by a committee of experts, include Sinohydro Corporation, China Road and Bridge Corporation, ZTE Corporation, Beijing HolleyCotec Pharmaceuticals and Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Group.

"The activity is the climax of our traditional friendship," said Malawi Ambassador to China Charles Namondwe, also representative of the African Union to China. He said he would promote publicity of the poll in Africa to encourage voting.

The poll is one of the activities marking the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, a platform for collective dialogue and practical cooperation.

"The award aims to commend enterprises that devote significant resources to African economies and social development, and publicize China-Africa friendship," said Feng Zuoku, Vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

Trade volume between China and African countries this year is expected to exceed the record $106.8 billion set in 2008. China became the biggest trade partner of Africa for the first time last year.
