Metro to open first electronics China store in Oct

German retailer Metro said on Thursday it will open its first media markt, or consumer electronics store, in China in October and will add 100 new stores to its global store network this year.

"After a period of reduced investment in 2009, we will step up our expansion speed significantly this year," Eckhard Cordes, Metro's chief executive, was quoted as saying in a statement.

Metro is the world's third-largest retailer after France's Carrefour and US giant Wal-Mart Stores .

The group has more than 40 Metro Cash & Carry wholesale stores in 34 Chinese cities and sees the potential for more than 100 stores in China.
