Number of Macao's RMB credit cards up 90% in 2009

There were a total of 359,241 personal credit cards in circulation in the fourth quarter of 2009, with the number of RMB cards surging 88.98 percent compared with a year earlier, according to the figures released on Thursday by the Monetary Authority of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

The numbers of Pataca cards, Hong Kong dollar cards and RMB cards were 287, 106, 56,066 and 16,069 respectively in the period, which went up by 1.95 percent, 0.91 percent and 12.82 percent quarter-to-quarter, the figures showed. Compared with a year earlier, Pataca cards and HKD cards grew 5.79 percent and 2.36 percent respectively.

Credit card credit limit granted by banks in Macao amounted to 6.49 billion patacas ($821 million) at the end of the fourth quarter of 2009, up 1.27 percent from the previous quarter. Credit card receivables reached 1.14 billion patacas, with a delinquency ratio of 1.18 percent in the period.

In the fourth quarter of last year, the credit card turnover rose by 14.24 percent from the previous quarter to 1.84 billion patacas, while credit card repayments, including payments for interest and fees, grew by 5.21 percent from the previous quarter to 1.77 billion patacas in the last quarter of 2009, according to the Monetary Authority.
