Gift-hunting expats who cannot find what they are looking for in Shanghai or on Chinese retail websites can scour the virtual racks of eBay this Christmas for discounts, direct shipping services and an English-friendly interface.

The world's largest online marketplace is gaining a foothold in China, and especially in Shanghai, where its users can also save up to 30 percent on products that are available on the city's shelves.

Although the bidding website has an estimated 200 million users in the country, its mainland domain (eBay.cn) only enables residents to sell goods and services overseas. It is waiting for China's developing e-commerce market to mature before it opens the domain to buyers.

Until that day comes, China-based users have to rely on eBay's 40 international websites to buy goods from 150 countries and regions, with the ones in Hong Kong (eBay.hk), the United States and the United Kingdom the most popular.

With more people warming to the convenience of online shopping this year, Shanghai Star Weekend lists some of the hottest-selling holiday items worldwide as supplied by eBay.
