Internet star seeks new dream

Kai-Fu Lee is a seasoned business executive with rich experience in the China market. Beginning his career as an engineer, Lee held top management positions at Apple, Silicon Graphics International and Microsoft.

As president of Google China from 2005 until September, Lee built a 700-person organization and helped boost Google's market share in China from 16.1 percent to 31.0 percent, according to domestic research firm Analysys International.

While introducing many of Google's famous products such as Google Maps, Google AdSense and Google Mobile Search to the world's largest Internet population, Lee's team also created innovative products such as the advertising-funded Google Music download program.

The team's Google Earthquake Maps helped thousands of victims and their families during China's Wenchuan earthquake last year.

As a leader in the Chinese Internet sector, Lee also devoted himself to helping Chinese technology students achieve their career goals.

He has given hundreds of lectures to more than 500,000 students. He has written seven public letters and three books for Chinese students. Lee also runs a popular website, www.kaifulee.com, to answer questions from Chinese students.

In his new book, Making A World of Difference, Lee writes that his goal is to help others achieve their childhood dreams.

His dream, Lee said, guided him to resign from Google this fall to establish a new "angel fund" that will support Chinese information technology startups.

He said he hopes that with his experiences at the world's top technology firms and his understanding of China, his new fund will one day give birth to world-class Chinese technology giants.
