The sedans were made by Toyota's joint venture in south China with Guangzhou Auto between May 15, 2006 and March 3, 2008, the venture said in a statement.

The joint venture started selling the Camry cars in China in 2006, priced at about 200,000 to 250,000 yuan .

Toyota's China spokesman could not be reached immediately for comment but the Shanghai Securities News said the recall would cost the Japanese automaker between 800 million yuan ($117 million) and 1.3 billion yuan.

Toyota also has another car production venture with FAW Group making Reiz and Crown sedans.

Guangzhou Auto is the parent of Hong Kong-listed Denway Motors.
