Yangkou Port in Jiangsu Province was partially opened last week to navigation to reinforce the port framework of the Yangtze Delta.

The port, which costs more than 5 billion yuan in its initial phase, is 17m deep. It has the conditions to build 62 deepwater berths to handle 50,000 to 300,000 ton ships.

The deepwater port will be a supplement to the Shanghai port, according to Du Qidong, deputy secretary general of China Ports and Harbors Association.

The Ministry of Railway and Jiangsu province have co-launched a 95.7 km railway project that connects Hai'an in Jiangsu and Yangkou Port, which is expected to be completed in 2010.
