HD TV for a global audience

As the fixed-line telecommunication partner of the Games, China Netcom provided high definition TV signals for 37 domestic and foreign TV broadcasters, enabling 4 billion people all over the world to watch the opening ceremony at the same time.

In addition, China Netcom also provided high-speed communication networks for more than 100 news agencies and thousands of journalists, enabling them to report the news on the opening ceremony through private lines, Internet, telephones and other communication tools.

The company also provided stable, reliable and high-speed telecommunication support and services for the command, security, traffic and fireworks systems to ensure that a splendid and marvelous opening ceremony would be held.

The opening ceremony lasted for more than five hours, during which time China Netcom used 15 satellite antennas and transmitted the signals through 28 signal carriers and transmission bandwidth with 35 gigabits of submarine and terrestrial optical fiber cables to transmit the TV programs for more than 30,000 minutes.

The telecommunication guarantee team of China Netcom provided six set of Ku-band movable satellite telecommunication systems to support the broadcasting work of the TV stations including NBC from the United States, TVB from Hong Kong, AZTECA from Mexico, ZLOBO and BAND from Brazil, and NHK from Japan, which lasted for over 1,000 minutes to provide public information of the opening ceremony.

What's more, China Netcom introduced duel-route-backup by using optical cables in the key telecommunication networks of the Olympic venues, the IBC and the MPC.

In total more than 6,000 km of pipelines and more than 50,000 core-km of optical fiber cables were laid. About 6,000 people worked for telecommunication guaranteeing and service work.

Thanks to the adequate preparation, the opening ceremony was held successfully.

The Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee congratulated China Netcom on its achievements for the Games.

The services provided by China Netcom for the opening ceremony include: the collection and transmission of signals of live programs, collection of signals of scenery video camera, VLAN services at the media stands of the National Stadium, Olympic CDMA services at the media stands and media working rooms of the National Stadium, Olympic CDMA services in the working rooms of the MPC, private line service and telephone services for the Olympic Family and media customers, tenancy and transmission of Games and Admin networks, telecommunication services for the command system of the Olympic Games, and telecommunication services for the fireworks section during the opening ceremony.

The plug-and-play Olympic CDMA service, the new service provided by China Netcom, was first used for the telecommunication services during the Games.
