Make life tough for kids, poll advises
(China Daily/Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-07-29 14:38 Chinese people believe parents should give their children a "tough upbringing", an online survey released yesterday has claimed. About 56 percent of the more than 5,500 random respondents said children should not be spoilt with money, while 53 percent said children should learn how to cope with setbacks, China Youth Daily reported. Seventy-three percent of the respondents said parents should not leave all their wealth to children, and 66 percent said parents should train their children to earn a living and work for their own futures, the paper said. The paper did not say whether any of the respondents had any experience of parenting. The paper quoted Xi Zhonghua from the China Family Education Training Center as saying "there is nothing wrong with parents making a fortune, but they should set a good example in how to manage money". Parents should help their children to "learn not to spend money like water" and help them learn how to "shape a future for themselves", Xi is reported to have said. The report did not say if Xi is a parent. Meanwhile, Zhengzhou in Henan province recently held a camp for schoolchildren. The youngsters are forced to pull up weeds, wash clothes and make dumplings, the paper said, without elaborating. (For more biz stories, please visit Industries)
