Shares drop on regional market declines

Chinese shares dropped 1.39 percent on Friday, in respond to sharp declines among regional markets amid further turmoil in the US credit markets.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slid 60.47 points, or 1.39 percent, to close at 4,300.52 on Friday.

The Shenzhen Component Index, which covers both A and B shares, closed at 15,560.85 points, down 135.28 points, or 0.86 percent, from the previous close.

Combined turnover on the two bourses totaled 139.15 billion yuan (US$19.57 billion).
