Business climate cools a bit

China's business climate index edged down to 143.6 points in the fourth quarter from 144.7 points in the third quarter, the National Breau of Statistics said last Thursday.

But the index was still well above the mid-point of 100, showing that business conditions remain healthy.

It was 4.2 points higher than a year earlier, the statistics agency said on its website.

Steel exports up 17%

China's steel product exports in December rose to 4.78 million tons, up 17 percent from 4.1 million tons in November, an industry website said last Thursday.

Traders said exporters rushed to send out their shipments at the end of last year ahead of expected tax changes.

China exported 130,000 tons of steel billet in December, 24 percent lower than 170,000 tons as of November, Umetal said on its website, citing figures from the Customs Administration.

China's iron ore imports in December fell to 34.2 million tons from 35.46 million tons in the previous month, Umetal said.
