Ministry of Health announced on May 8 that medical expenses of both outpatients and inpatients have increased in the past six years, according to Shanghai Securities News.

In information released by the ministry, the average expense of outpatients was 96 yuan (US$12.5) in 2001, and 129 yuan in 2006, an increase of nearly 40 percent.

The ministry stressedthat medical expenses did not equal medical costs. In fact, medical expenses rose between seven to nine percent annually, but the money patients spend on medicine is cheaper year-on-year.
