China's auto sales and production for the first 10 months of this year both beat last year's totals for the same period, buoyed by new models and price drops, a report said yesterday.

Carmakers in China sold 5.76 million units between January and October, an increase of 25.69 percent from a year earlier, according to the China Association of Automobile Corp.

Auto production grew by 27.56 percent to 5.89 million units year on year.

Both production and sales for the year are expected to top seven million units, the association said.

Last year, China produced 5.70 million vehicles - up 12.7 percent from 2004 - and sold more than 5.75 million units - an increase of 13.54 percent from 2004.

The market rebounded in the second half of last year from sluggish sales with new models and lower prices.

More than 60 domestically made models, including Shanghai General Motors' LaCrosse, Ford's Focus hatchback as well as Volkswagen's Sagitar, hit the market in the first half of this year.
