Three obstacles hit wind power market

How big is the future wind power market? Wang Zhongying, a director with the Renewable Energy Development Center of the Development and Reform Commission, said generating units and under-construction projects by 2020 are expected to reach 40 million kilowatts (kW) with an investment of 360 billion yuan (US$45.73 billion).

However, three obstacles - money, policy and talent - are blocking the promising market.

Statistics show the world's top six countries in terms of generating capacity in 2005 were Germany with 28,428 megawatts (MW), Spain (10,027 MW), the United States (9,149 MW), India (4,430 MW), Denmark (3,122 MW), and Italy (1,717 MW). China had an increase of 500,000 kW installed capacity in 2005, up 254 percent from 2004, and the newly-installed capacity is expected to surpass one million kW this year.
