China, India restart border trade (China Daily) Updated: 2006-07-10 14:05 Shoe import quota
The Chinese shoemaking industry strongly opposes
any quota system on imports of Chinese-made leather shoes, said Wei Yafei, a
spokesperson for the China Leather Association. Wei was commenting on the
European Union's proposal to reintroduce quotas on imported Chinese
shoes.
Reuters quoted an unnamed European Union diplomat as saying that
the European Commission had proposed a quota-based system for leather shoes from
China and Viet Nam, in order to solve dumping disputes with the two
countries.
"If this plan is implemented, that would mean stepping back to
before 2005, when quotas on shoes had not been removed," Wei said.
